Gmail tab notifier (Firefox)

Came up with this after playing around with some other notifying tools, it’s simple but for me gets the job done perfectly, this script shows you when you have new mail in your gmail inbox, all you have to do is have your gmail open in a tab in firefox and the style does the rest. I think it looks best using app tabs, it looks and acts just like an app :)

Memory card benchmarks

I was looking for some cheap Sony Memory Sticks for my PSP as I’m in need of a lot more space for music, video etc… However, the state of the flash memory market hasn’t changed and PRO DUO cards are still much more expensive than Micro SD cards. An 8GB PRO duo costs around £25 whereas 8GB Micro SD can range from £8-£15. So I was thrilled when I spied this:

Dual Micro SD PRO DUO Adapter

And was salivating at the prosepct of paying £18 for 16GB of PRO DUO storage instead of £55. That’s right, you can pop in 2 Micro SD cards up to 16GB and use them both as one drive in PRO DUO devices. It seems too good to be true, but it works and apparently there are no drawbacks. The only problem was that these £8 8GB Micro SD cards were only Class 2, meaning I may have to shell out more making it less of a bargain, there was lots of information available on the “minimum” write speeds of SD cards and the “maximum” write speeds of PRO DUO cards but I couldn’t find any concrete data on how fast cards should actually be.

So as usual I went crazy and I decided to benchmark a few cards to see if I would be losing out by using 2 Micro SD cards instead of a normal PRO DUO and to see if I was going to be sitting around checking my watch while this “Class 2″ SD card loaded stuff. Read on for graphs etc. Read the rest of this entry »

If for some reason it’s not working, try here or here.

White or Black?

I’m going to get myself a Sony MWD in a little while, it’s a lovely little MP3 player which is a little bigger than your average USB flash drive but is also a 2GB MP3 player with up to 12 hours play time. Suits me down to the ground, no faffing with wires, software or chargers, I can just plug it in to any PC and charge it! So, white or black (read more to vote, or vote on the right hand bar)?

Halo Wars

Just before I try out the demo I thought I would post this nice video showing some of the highlights of Halo Wars, it’s looking pretty good, very nice units, I’m still afraid it might not work very well with a 360 controller, but that’s what the demo is for, lets hope it blows me away…

Defrag in Vista

Anyone else not like the defrag tool in vista, not only does it not show you any kind of visual representation of the fragmentation of your disk or the fragmentation percentage, but it seems to take forever to complete it’s run, infact, on my laptop [250GB HDD] even after leaving it run for 10+ hours it have not once finished or said it was done de-fragmenting. Even after running another defrag tool it still would never finish. So here’s a little alternative, if you want to have a defrag done in a timeframe that suits you and not Zeus himself then give AUSlogics defrag a go, it gives you a visual image of the data on your disk, completes quickly and even tells you an estimate of the % it will speed up your disk when it has finished it’s run. Best of all it’s free! :D Try out their registry defrag tool too.

Been spendin’

So yea, I bought another 20″ Widescreen monitor (LG L204WS) so my desk will be pretty much full of them, will be nice to have two monitors again too, especially since I’ll be doing a lot of website work, and ooh, I’ll be able to use the dual screen mode in games like Supreme Commander.

Next up is this lovely clock, I’ve always wanted a little clock for my desk, just something that was simple and was lit up all the time, this one seems to fit the bill nicely and its a USB hub to boot, no more bending down under the desk to attach stuff in the dark. Best of all it was less than £10 and should be with me within a week!

I also bought some 3D glasses, you know the red and blue kind that you got as a kid to read those 3D comics, they were £1 for 2 pairs. And why? Because they’re cheap and I’d like to see how Trackmania looks with them as it supports that 3D mode. I have a sneaky suspicion it will ruin the colours, not sure why…

Last but not least I’ve been looking at a replacement laptop, I was looking at getting one of those HP tablet laptops, however, as cool as touch screen is and having a tablet would be nice, those pros come with the con of 12″ instead of 15″ screen. I think I’ll stick with a much more stylish Sony Vaio:

Signatures

I was bored and haven’t had a forum signature for a long time due to not having access to a lot of my old files, and now I have a desktop PC I can actually make something look half decent, just made a couple:

I’ve Also used a few neat tricks to spruce things up a bit; firstly I used the url shrinker I mentioned in a previous post so I only have to put in http://url.csignal.org/sig instead of the full image url, makes it easier to remember and it also means that in the future if I change my signature I don’t have to go about many sites to edit it, just have to change it in one place and all websites will have the new one.

I also used an image rotation script, which means that every time someone views a page with my signature on it loads a random one of the above images and displays it, so people will get a little variety.
